Laparoscopic Gastric Sleeve

Laparoscopic gastric sleeve

Laparoscopic gastric sleeve is the second most commonly performed bariatric surgery after the gastric bypass. The increase in its frequency is due to two reasons:1) as a replacement of the adjustable gastric band due to inadequate weight loss and chronic side-effects and 2) because it is a technically easier operation than the gastric bypass and it does not require such extensive experience. Sleeve gastrectomy offers very good weight loss but publications regarding its long-term weight loss results are still lacking.

The main characteristics of the sleeve gastrectomy are:
  • The lateral 2/3 of the stomach are removed permanently.
  • The small intestine is not bypassed
  • Weight loss is achieved solely through calorie restriction.
  • Based on Dr. Raftopoulos’ experience you will lose on average 60-65% of your excess weight.

The average operative time is 1.5-2 hours, the average hospital stay is 1 day and return to work is anticipated in 1-2 weeks.
